Actually smokes can be extened to the 5 or even ten second rule.  You see the combustion of smokes creates heat thus sterilizing the smoke itself.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Now on the other hand cold items are only safe for 1 second or less. You know that theory about people being frozen then brought back to life, it applies here.
